Brain Food: Think Sharp

What foods keep our mind young and boost our thinking process? Find out here.

Most of us pay at least a little bit of attention with regards to the foods we eat as they pertain to our bodies, but what about the foods that we eat that influence our brain power?

The term brain food typically applies to books or other media that stimulate our thinking process, but it should also apply to the food that will help our brain function well at every age. If we can eat healthily to protect our hearts, we should also eat healthily to save our brains!

Spinach
Spinach is one of the top super foods out there, and it makes a lot of sense. As a darker leafy green, spinach is packed with the components that prevent dementia later on down the line.

This slightly bitter green is full of vitamin K, vitamin E and folate, which can help you keep your memory and your ability to reason as you age.

If you are having a little bit of trouble stomaching these greens, consider drizzling your spinach salad with a small amount of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Some people really love it with a pinch of lemon juice.

While spinach seems to be the best for this purpose, you simply cannot go wrong with leafy greens like kale.

Fish
No one needs to be told to eat more sushi, but now we are learning that it is better for you than we thought. Oily fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to help both the heart and the brain.

While it is possible to get omega-3 fatty acids from supplements, it is far better for you to get them directly from the source! When you are looking for fish to use as brain food, flounder, mahi-mahi, salmon and tuna are among the leaders of the pack.

Whether you steam it, bake it or eat it raw, there’s no getting away from the fact that fish is terrific for you!

Beans and Soy
When you are looking to eat well for your mind, make sure that you consider what beans and soy can do for you.

Both of these foods are full of iron, and when you take into account the fact that 10 percent of women in the United States are anemic, chances are good that you are not getting enough iron!

Iron affects how well you focus, your memory and your ability to learn so don’t short yourself on this important part of your diet.

Curry
If you already love Indian food or Southeast Asian food, likely you are already ahead of the game when it comes to staying smart.

Curry is a traditional dish throughout India and Southeast Asia, and as it turns out, the turmeric that is used in curry carries a compound that seems to inhibit Alzheimer’s Disease.

On top of that, it also reduces inflammation and helps lower cholesterol, something that can keep you healthier across the board. All curry contains turmeric, so whether you like yours sweet or spicy, make sure that you snag a bowl today.

Dark Chocolate
If you are someone who loves sweets, you’re going to love eating dark chocolate to help your mental processes as you age.

Dark chocolate has antioxidants that help lower blood sugar, and it also contains Polyphemus  which increase the flow of blood to your brain.

Think about pairing your dark chocolate with fruit or bread when you are having a craving for something rich and delicious.
