Spooky Destinations to Make You Truly Afraid

Cnngo.com gathered the seven deadliest, most spooky destinations around the world. Check them out!

When it comes right down to it, a Haunted House or Spooky Mansion is just a bunch of smoke, mirrors, and tricks designed to give you a fright. But there are some places around the world that by their very nature will quicken your pulse and make your heart race.

Read on for cnngo.com seven freakiest destinations:

Chernobyl Amusement Park
This particular site is not only creepy as all get-out, but has the additional thrill of threatening your life with hazardous radiation.

When the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant had it’s meltdown back in 1986, the nearby amusement park was abandoned along with the rest of the surrounding homes and villages.

Now time has crept through the once vibrant playground rendering it an eerie and silent reminder of nuclear power and the horrors it can unleash.

The Cathedral of Bone: Sedlec Ossuary
This little sanctuary to the macabre contains statues and other works crafted by the remains of somewhere around 40-thousand human skeletons.

The bones were donated by thousands of devout Roman Catholics after the Abbot of Sedlec returned from a pilgrimage to the holy land with a sample of soil taken from Golgatha, the site where Jesus was crucified.

So many clamored to be buried there that it simply became a matter of saving space to make the cathedral an ossuary and turn the bones into artwork.

The chandelier itself is worth what you’ll pay for admission; just remember that those who run the place consider it a holy sanctuary.

Aokigahara Forest
This densely wooded forest at the base of Mount Fuji is sometimes called the Suicide Forest. In 2010 alone 54 people were recorded as taking a stroll into the woods with no intentions of ever walking out again.

You may have heard of some creepy forests before, but this one truly is the master.

Normal forests have some amount of wildlife, but this forest is notoriously quiet, compasses do not function inside of it, and is said to inhabit the spirits of those that walked into the woods never to return.

Akodessewa Fetish Market
There are not many people that still practice the art of Voodoo, but for those who do, the Akodessewa Fetish Market is where you go to get what you need.

If you are looking for the skull of a monkey, wild cat, jungle crocodile…or unfortunate traveler, this is the place for you.

Or if you just want a nice bone to take home, believe me, you won’t find a better collection for a better price.

Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital
The creepiest for last. This site ran as a legitimate hospital for many years until its patients started dying from mysterious circumstances. The rising death toll eventually lead to the hospital closing its doors, but time has done little to stem the rumors about this haunted location.
