Wine: A Diet Beverage?

A 2010 study reveals that women drinking moderate quantities of wine on a regular basis are less likely to gain weight than female non-drinkers. Shall we hit the pub instead of our local gym? Read on.

If you are a woman who enjoys her wine, you are in a lot of luck. New research suggests that women who regularly drink wine are less likely to gain weight than women who do not drink at all.

Whether you are on a diet or not, you do not have to give up that glass of wine at dinner. You can drink a glass of red wine while you are having dinner with your significant other or sip on a mixed cocktail while you are out with your girlfriends on a night out.

The study was published in the most recent issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. It was stated in the study that the chance of becoming obese is almost one-third lower for middle-aged women who consume one or two alcoholic beverages a day than women who do not drink any alcohol.

However, this does not apply to men. First of all, alcohol does not speed up a man’s metabolism like it does a woman’s. Second of all, men seem to add the calories from alcohol to their daily calorie total, while women tend to substitute their food for alcohol.

Many women seem to choose drinking alcohol over eating food. For example, when a server at a restaurant asks a table full of ladies if they would like to see the dessert menu, most of them will shake their heads. However, they will have no problem ordering another glass of wine.

Other studies suggest that red wine inhibits the development of fat cells in women. The good news just keeps coming, doesn’t it? You no longer have to feel guilty about drinking alcoholic beverages anymore.

Although drinking alcohol in moderation is good for you, avoid drinking it right before you go to bed. Doing so can keep you up all night and might even cause you to put on weight. It is much better to drink alcohol at least three to four hours before you go to bed.

Drink a couple of glasses of wine while you are eating dinner or when you are watching the news at 6 p.m. Also, do not just rush out and drink a lot of alcohol to lose weight. If you consume too much, it can actually cause you to gain weight. Try to limit yourself to no more than two alcoholic beverages a day.
